Problem Areas along bike shoulder which could cause an accident etc.

( Also any information that can be provided to help in improvements to the bicycle shoulder )

ACCIDENTS DUE TO NEGLECT:

These Car Carriers on L.B.K. Park anywhere they want in Nov. and April when they bring lazy Snowbirds Cars back and forth! Stay away from these!

SIDEWALK ROCKS! Either F.D.O.T OR L.B.K. PUBLIC WORKS DEPT is
dumping Rocks and Sand in corner potholes that cars make because they don't
know how to turn out onto Gulf of Mexico properly! This is very dangerous!

1) Posted 7/6/2003 :  Property Owners paving over or cutting into the right of way shoulder!

This is illegal because the Public owns the Right of Way! It cost 100's of thousands of dollars to lay these shoulders and they destroy it in this way!

This leaves dangerous grooves for tires to get caught in !!

Sand From the Beach...
Homeowners Unpaved Driveways and Construction sites pull sand and dirt onto shoulders and this is very hazardous!

Be especially careful when riding through Anna Maria, Holmes Beach and Coquina Beach Area! They lack cleaning shoulders off, leaving hazardous conditions!

The Buses and trolleys pull a lot of sand into the bike lanes!!!

Sprinklers on SR789 LBK  ( This shows broken head watering pavement .. )

Homeowners and Condominiums put their smelly sprinkler systems on in the evening when bike clubs ride 5-7pm spraying sulfur water in their faces, forcing them to ride out into dangerous traffic to avoid the noxious sprays! ( This also effects people walking on the sidewalks etc ) The sprinklers should come on after dark, as the water quickly evaporates thus adding to water shortage problem ...

PLEASE WRITE TO THE TOWN COMMISSIONERS OF L.B.K.!

L.B.K. Bike Shoulders have Sand/Gravel issues, the construction sites and beach access roads are to blame. Also lawn sprinklers spraying sulfur water on our faces is no fun: Write a letter to L.B.K. town commissioners complaining of the gravel and water sprinklers! Here are their addresses:

Here is a generic letter to use:

Dear Longboat Key Commissioners,

I am writing in regard to the issue of Dirt and Gravel on the bicycle shoulders and Sulfur Sprinkler Systems on Gulf of Mexico Drive! When the weather gets hot, many people like to walk, jog, bicycle or take their pets out on the sidewalks along Gulf of Mexico Drive early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the hot sun...

Unfortunately, the shoulders are full of sand and gravel from construction sites and beach access roads, We ask if the Public Works can take a street sweeper or shoulder cleaner up the shoulders more often. Also many homeowners and Condominiums
put on their Sprinkler Systems spraying disgusting sulfur water into the faces of people and pets! It smells and if it gets into your eyes it burns! Also making puddles of water over the sidewalks to making walking a slippery mess!

It is time to put sprinkler timers on between 10pm and 5am!

Watering in the hot sun only evaporates the water off lawns faster!
Watering at night it will save precious water!

Please help keep cycling safe on L.B.K. by keeping shoulders clean and pass a referendum to stop daylight watering off lawns on
Gulf of Mexico Drive.
